Spider overview

Although spiders in Arkansas are often considered insects, they are arachnids. They have eight legs, no wings or antennae and feed on insects.

The American house spider is a nuisance spider that infests homes and businesses in Arkansas. An adult female house spider can measure up to 8 mm in length while an adult male only measures 4 mm. Both are typically brown or gray in color with darker markings along their bodies.

There are also dangerous spiders including black widow spiders and brown recluse spiders. Black widows are shiny black spiders with fat abdomens and the easily recognizable by a red, hour-glass shaped mark on the underside. Female black widows are larger than males, measuring up to 1 1/2″. Brown recluse spiders are larger in size with both genders of the species measuring approximately 1/2 inch in length. They are yellow-tan in color with long legs and a fiddle-shaped pattern close to the eyes. Visit our brown recluse spider identification page to learn more about this dangerous spider.

Why do I have a spider problem?

House spiders will move indoors to find secure areas to build their webs. Corners, closets and areas where walls meet ceilings are all common places to find spider webs. Outdoors, spiders construct webs in protected areas around doors, windows and outdoor light fixtures. Any area that will attract their prey. If a web is not providing adequate prey the spider will abandon it for a new location. That’s why you get those dusty, unattractive webs. Brown recluse spiders are shy in nature, have a habit of taking shelter indoors. They are mainly active at night when they come out to hunt for insects. Black widow spiders like to remain outdoors and will spin webs near the ground in dark places. They will also spin webs in the dark corners of sheds, garages, crawl spaces and basements if there is an ample food supply.

Are spiders dangerous?

Although house spiders can bite, their venom is not dangerous to humans and they are not known to be aggressive in nature. They are a nuisance pest because of their habit of building and abandoning webs indoors. Both black widow and brown recluse spiders can be dangerous. Brown recluse will bite if disturbed or cornered. The affects of a brown recluse spider bite can range from mild irritation to slow-healing open sores. It may even prove fatal for some.
