Carpenter Ants Overview

Carpenter ants are just one of the many species of ant that can invade homes throughout Arkansas. However, unlike a lot of other ant species that are considered to be nuisance pests, carpenter ants are not. They are a wood destroying ant that can cause extensive and costly damage to homes and other buildings. Carpenter ants, unlike termites, do not eat the wood that they are tunneling through, instead they remove it in order to create tunnels and nesting areas. These wood destroying insects can be red, black, brown, or a combination of red and black in color and the workers range in size from 1/8th to ½ of an inch in length. The queens grow larger than the other ants; up to 1 inch in length.

Why do I have them?

Carpenter ants generally nest outside in some form of decaying or hollow wood- fallen trees, tree stumps, or in wood piles. They do, however, come into homes through small openings, cracks, and crevices as they are foraging for food and water sources, and once inside they may create satellite nesting areas behind walls or underneath floors. They prefer to nest in wood that has been previously damaged by water. While inside your home these invaders travel through your kitchen and pantry areas gathering crumbs and other food debris to bring back to their colony.

Are carpenter ants dangerous?

Carpenter ants are not dangerous to people because they do not sting or bite, but they are very dangerous to homes and other buildings. If left untreated the extensive tunnels and nesting areas that they create through the structural wood of a building can greatly weaken its structural integrity.

How do I get rid of carpenter ants?

Getting rid of carpenter ants is more difficult than you may think because it takes more than just getting rid of the ants you see marching through your kitchen. All of the many nesting areas and queens need to be found and eradicated. Also, changes need to be made around your home to fix the areas that are allowing the ants to come in. For help to safely and completely get rid of your carpenter ant problem you should contact the pest control experts at McCauley Services.

Can I do it myself?

Do-it-yourself pest control is never recommended. The sprays and ant control products available ‘over the counter’ can be very dangerous for you, your children, and pets to be around if they are not mixed and used properly.
